Getting Started in Needle In A Haystack
From the viral clip to a real Steam wishlist, without mixing up clones.
Needle In A Haystack Simulator is a first-person search game about a single sewing needle buried in 5,000,000 pieces of hay. Studio Bitdot (Nas Nakarus) built it; Polden Publishing is bringing it to Steam in Q4 2026. This page is the onboarding guide for people who watched the clip, laughed, and then asked what you actually do for more than ten seconds.
If you only remember one sentence: you start with nothing, you pick the pile, you sell what you find, and you decide whether tools are cheating or the entire joke. Steam says that in plainer words. This wiki just turns it into a first-session plan.
Confirm you have the original game
The official store page is Needle In A Haystack Simulator (app 5159870). Wishlist that. Do not wishlist a Roblox experience with a similar name, and do not confuse it with the separate Steam listing from NoGlyph. The original vs copies page exists because this idea was cloned within two days of the X post.

The core loop, step by step
1. Stand in front of the pile
Steam footage and screenshots put you in a huge indoor space with a dome of brown hay that is taller than the workers. You are not solving a riddle. You are looking at a physics pile made of individual straws.
2. Pull hay
At the start you grab pieces one by one. That is the proverb made literal. It is also how you uncover valuables mixed into the stack. Steam does not publish a loot table yet, so do not expect a wiki spreadsheet of drop rates. Expect junk, money, and the occasional useful find.
3. Sell what is not the needle
Cash exists so the search can escalate. You sell valuables to fund tools that move or process more hay at once. If you hate that idea, skip the shop. Steam calls that the true needle-in-a-haystack experience: no tools, no automation, just you and the pile. That path has its own page: pure mode.
4. Buy a bigger method — or do not
Store screenshots already show more than bare hands:
- A rake or pitchfork on co-op workers.
- A first-person blower throwing hay off the face of the stack.
- A handheld metal detector with a Radius 1m readout.
- Conveyor belts (one is labelled Conveyor LS1) carrying hay away from the pile.
Nas also teased shovels, baskets, and a leaf blower in early replies. Treat those as developer comments, not a patch-note shop. Rankings live on the tool tier list and the upgrade path.
5. Find the needle
The win condition is one object. Screenshots show it as a short silver needle sitting in the brown hay. It is easy to miss and possible to spot if you stop mashing and actually look. How to find the needle is the visual guide.
Your first hour plan (when the game launches)
The title is still upcoming, so this is a plan for launch day, not a live walkthrough of a patched build.
- Check system requirements. Minimum is Windows 10 64-bit, an i5-8400 / Ryzen 5 2600 class CPU, and a GTX 1060 6GB / RX 580 8GB. Five million straws is a physics flex.
- Set controls. Steam lists full controller support. Bind a comfortable grab and look-sensitivity before you invite friends.
- Decide your rule set. Hands only, casual tools, or factory co-op. The strategy ranking compares those styles.
- If you have friends, assign walls. The co-op guide explains why eight people on one face of the dome is wasted labour.
- Run the hay search calculator so nobody is shocked when a one-piece-per-second solo run is a multi-week job.
What this game is not
It is not a Roblox tycoon with a code box. It is not a battle pass. It is not a farming sim where the needle is a quest item with a marker. Steam tags it Casual, Simulation, Hidden Object, Organizing, Incremental, First-Person, Automation, and Online Co-Op. That mix is the pitch: meditative until it is industrial, industrial until someone screams because they saw metal.
Nas has said he wanted to push repetitive, meditative games to a stupid extreme. He also said, when the clip went up, that he had not found the needle yet. That is not flavour text. It is the difficulty curve.
Wishlist, playtest, and waiting
Playtest signups closed on 31 August 2026 after about 23,000 people applied. If you missed it, you wait with everyone else. Details sit on the playtest page. Release timing, languages, and price rumours sit on Q4 2026 release date.
Supported languages on Steam include English (full audio), German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Russian, and Simplified Chinese. This wiki localises English, German, Spanish, and Japanese.
After the first session
Once you understand the loop, stop rereading this page. Go to how to find the needle so you know the silhouette, then either pure mode or the upgrade path. If the pile is a social event, stay in the co-op guide. If you only wanted to know whether to spend money, read the preview and wishlist — or walk away. Five million pieces will still be there in Q4.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about finding the needle.
How do you play Needle In A Haystack?
Pick hay, look for a silver needle, sell valuables, and optionally buy tools. Full steps are in this getting started guide.
Is there a tutorial?
Steam has not published a tutorial script yet. Expect the pile itself to be the tutorial. Practise looking with how to find the needle.
Should I buy tools on day one?
Only if you want the industrial version. Steam lets you skip the shop. Compare pure mode and the tool ranking.
