Needle In A Haystack System Requirements

Official Steam specs for a pile that is actually five million objects.

PC System Requirements

Needle In A Haystack Simulator is a physics toy wearing a proverb. The Steam page already publishes minimum and recommended PC specs. This guide copies those numbers, explains why they are not a joke, and tells you what to check before Q4 2026 so the hay does not turn into a slideshow right as the needle appears.

The game is still upcoming. Drivers, a Steam Deck verdict, and a macOS build are not listed. Steam Deck compatibility currently shows as unknown. Platforms on the store page: Windows only.

Official Steam specifications

Minimum

  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-8400 / AMD Ryzen 5 2600
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB / AMD RX 580 8GB
  • Storage: 5 GB available space
  • OS: Windows 10/11 64-bit
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-10400 / AMD Ryzen 5 3600
  • Graphics: NVIDIA RTX 2060 / AMD RX 6600
  • Storage: 5 GB available space

RAM is not listed on the store page. Do not invent a number. If a later Steam edit adds memory, it will land on the updates hub. Until then, treat 16 GB as a sensible modern floor for a physics pile, and do not treat that sentence as an official requirement.

Why a haystack needs a GTX 1060

The clip looks like a walking simulator. The simulation is the product. Five million individual straws means:

  • A lot of draw calls or instancing on screen when you stare at a face of the dome.
  • Physics when you pull, blow, or drop hay onto conveyors.
  • Networked objects in co-op when eight people disturb the same pile.

Minimum hardware is a 2016–2018 gaming PC. If you are under that, expect to lower resolution and view distance — if those sliders exist at launch. Studio Bitdot has not published a graphics menu screenshot. Plan to stand further from the pile if the frame time spikes; standing inside a million straws is the expensive camera.

Storage, install, and SSD

Five gigabytes is small by 2026 standards. An SSD is still the right disk because streaming a giant stack should not hitch when you turn. Steam does not require an SSD in the text. Put it on one anyway.

Laptop and handheld notes

  • Windows laptops: a GTX 1060 6GB class GPU is the line. 4 GB 1060 variants are not the card Steam named.
  • Steam Deck: unknown. Do not promise 30 or 60 fps. Wishlist and wait for a Deck verification or a community report after launch.
  • Mac / Linux: not listed. Proton might work later; it is not a store feature today.
  • Controller on PC: full controller support is listed. That does not change the GPU line. See controls.

Network

Online co-op needs a connection. Steam does not publish bandwidth numbers. For a physics-heavy lobby, wired or a strong 5 GHz link beats a crowded 2.4 GHz adapter. If the pile desyncs, that is a launch-week bug to watch on updates, not something you fix with a better needle strategy.

Pre-launch checklist

  1. Compare your GPU name to the list above, not to “it runs Fortnite.”
  2. Confirm Windows 10/11 64-bit. 32-bit is out.
  3. Free 5 GB plus swap room for Steam.
  4. Update GPU drivers in the month the game actually ships, not today in September if you are only wishlisting.
  5. If you plan a factory of belts, budget for the recommended GPU. Minimum is for a quieter pile.
  6. Read getting started so you know what the hardware is for.

Performance vs finding the needle

A dropped frame is how a glint disappears. If you have to choose between ultra hay and a stable 60, take the stable 60. How to find the needle is an eyesight guide; it assumes the silver stick is actually on screen for more than one frame.

Pure-mode players might look at a quieter pile (no belts). That can run easier. Co-op factory players should aim at recommended specs. The strategy ranking is how you pick the playstyle; this page is how you pick the PC.

Specs can change

Upcoming games sometimes raise minimums after a playtest. The August 2026 playtest is already closed (playtest news). If Polden edits the Steam requirements, trust the store page over this article and then we will match it. For the current text, the table above is the whole official story: Windows, those CPUs, those GPUs, 5 GB, Q4 2026.
