Needle In A Haystack Upgrade Path
Sell valuables, then buy eyesight, then buy volume — not the other way around.
Steam’s economy sentence is short: find valuables in the hay, sell them, buy tools that search, move, or process more hay. This page is the order we recommend based on what the screenshots actually show. It is a preview-era path for Needle In A Haystack Simulator, not a gold spreadsheet. Prices are unpublished. Names may change at launch. The logic should not: buy the ability to notice metal before you buy the ability to throw metal away.
Pair this with the tool ranking (what is good) and the strategy ranking (how you play). New players should still read getting started.
Step 0 — Hands and a sell loop
You begin with nothing. That is on the store page. Your first minutes are identical to pure mode except you are allowed to pocket valuables. Do not skip looking. The needle can appear before you can afford a shop. Learn the silver shape on how to find the needle.
Sell junk when you have a bundle, not after every straw, if the live UI allows it. We have not seen a cash HUD. Expect a bench or a bin near the warehouse floor.
Step 1 — A peeler (rake or blower)
Shown: rakes on co-op workers; a first-person blower stripping the face of the dome.
Buy a peeler when your hands are the bottleneck and your eyes are still fresh. A rake is the safer first purchase: slower, easier to watch the layer you just moved. A blower is the greed purchase: faster peel, higher chance the needle becomes a projectile.
If you are two players, one peeler is enough. The other person watches the new face. That pairing is the smallest useful shop plan in the co-op guide.
Teased in the same neighbourhood: shovel, basket, leaf blower. If those land in the shop, slot them as peelers unless a description says they detect metal.
Step 2 — The detector
Shown: handheld detector, Radius 1m.
This is the first upgrade that matches the win condition. Save for it even if the blower is more fun. Sweep your claimed slice. When it talks, switch to hands. Do not rank up a ping with a belt.
Solo players should prioritise the detector over a second peeler. Crews should buy one and pass it, not four overlapping metres.
Step 3 — Conveyors and “ridiculous” automation
Shown: Conveyor LS1 and a belt farm in front of the dome.
Buy belts when:
- You have a spotter.
- You have a peeler feeding the line.
- You have accepted that this session is a factory, not a proverb.
Do not buy belts first. A belt without eyes is a hay deletion machine. Steam promises the operation becomes ridiculous as you progress. Ridiculous is the point of this step, not step 1.
Place belts so the cut face stays visible. If the machine wraps the whole dome, you will process hay you never scanned. In eight-player lobbies, two people on belts, one on detector, the rest on slices is a sane split.
Step 4 — Optional: stay poor on purpose
You can stop at step 0 forever. That is pure mode. It is a valid endgame. It is also the worst hay-per-minute column on the calculator. Choose it as a rule, not because you forgot the shop exists.
Suggested carts by lobby size
Solo: detector → blower. Skip belts until you can watch an output and a face at once (you cannot).
Two to three: one peeler, one detector, no belt farm yet.
Four to eight: one detector, two peelers, then belts with a dedicated output watcher and a floor watcher.
These carts assume the screenshot kit. If launch adds a magnet, a hopper filter, or a needle basket, we will rewrite this page from the updates hub.
Mistakes that burn your first valuables
- Belt first. You will feel productive and miss silver.
- Everyone buys the same tool. Four blowers, zero eyes.
- Selling and shopping in the needle’s face. Walk away from the slice you were scanning so you can resume it.
- Assuming upgrades tell you where the needle is. Only the detector even tries. Everything else is landscaping.
- Buying from a clone shop. Wrong game. Original vs copies.
After the path is built
You still need to look. Upgrades change the strategy ranking you should pick, not the win condition. When Q4 2026 lands, compare this order to the real prices and to whatever achievement list Polden ships. Until then, spend like someone who wants to see the needle, not like someone who wants to empty a barn for its own sake — unless emptying the barn is the session, in which case skip to belts and have fun.
Hardware note: belts plus eight players is the expensive screenshot. Check system requirements before you promise a factory lobby on a minimum GPU.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about finding the needle.
What should I buy first in Needle In A Haystack?
A peeler if your hands are slow, then the metal detector. Full order is on the upgrade path.
Should I buy conveyors early?
No. Buy eyesight first. Belts are a later, crew-sized step.
Do I have to upgrade?
No. Steam allows a no-tool run. That dare is pure mode.
