Closed Playtest News

On 31 August 2026, Polden Publishing posted Steam news for Needle In A Haystack Simulator: playtest signups are closed. The line they led with is the whole mood of the project: gathering about 23,000 people was easier than finding one needle.

If you are here to register, you are late. If you are here to know what that closure means for a Q4 2026 wishlist, stay.

What was announced

  • Playtest signups closed (Steam news, 31 August 2026).
  • About 23,000 people had signed up.
  • The game itself remains upcoming, not launched.
  • No public post in that news item listed a playtest end date, a Steam key wave schedule, or NDA rules.

We will not invent those missing pieces. If you received a key, follow whatever mail Polden sent. If you did not, you wait with the rest of the wishlist.

What a closed signup is not

It is not a launch. Steam still shows Q4 2026 and “this game is not yet available.” See release date.

It is not a promise that 23,000 people are in-game right now. Signup count is interest, not concurrent players.

It is not a Roblox beta. Clone experiences on that platform have their own populations and have nothing to do with this test. Original vs copies.

If you got in

Play the original app. Take notes this wiki can use without leaking NDA material:

  • Did the shop match the screenshots (detector, blower, rake, belts)?
  • Did the needle look like the silver stick in stills?
  • Did eight players actually fit, or was the screenshot a posed max?
  • Did controls feel better on mouse or pad?
  • Did the pile run on minimum specs?

Share what the NDA allows on the official Discord (link on official links). Do not paste keys. Do not claim the full release is out.

If you did not get in

You still have the useful work:

  1. Wishlist app 5159870.
  2. Read getting started so launch day is not your first time hearing the loop.
  3. Decide now whether you want pure mode or a tool path.
  4. Bookmark how to find the needle.
  5. Watch the news hub for a second test or a demo.

Missing the playtest is normal. Twenty-three thousand signups for a haystack is already a joke that landed. Polden does not owe a second wave in the post they published. They might still run one. We will log it when they do.

Why the number matters

A viral clip can be empty calories. 23,000 playtest signups is a different signal: people were willing to put an email on a Steam form. That supports the preview conclusion that this is a real wishlist, not only a meme. It does not guarantee the factory loop stays fun after two hours. Playtests exist to learn that.

Expect the closed test to influence:

  • Physics budgets (five million objects is the brag).
  • Co-op netcode for the eight-player shot.
  • Whether automation needs a needle-safety net.
  • Language QA — Japanese support was announced days later.

None of that is public patch notes yet. Treat this page as a status: signups closed, game still upcoming, needle still the problem.

When a new test opens, this article will add the date at the top and the news hub will point here. Until then, do not refresh a closed form. Go split a slice on paper with friends using the co-op guide and the calculator. That homework transfers to whatever build they ship in Q4.
